Rye Pier Shore Dive

Etc/GMT+10

Grace and I are going out to Rye on Sunday the 10th. Anybody who wants to sign in, join up.

High tide is about 4:30PM on the 10th, so it should be good diving. Also, it's a great place for those who want to stay late and do a night dive.

Portsea Pier

Portsea PierPortsea PierI wonder if any diver certified in Victoria has NOT been to Portsea Pier? Most open water classes have sessions here and it's a good place for anyone to practice skills. The bottom is mostly sandy and the pylons are covered in colourful sponges.

Portsea Pier Rinse Off: The fresh water shower for swimmers and divers is convenient to the pier.Portsea Pier Rinse Off: The fresh water shower for swimmers and divers is convenient to the pier.Portsea pier is also a popular boarding point for a lot of boat dive operators. It is the most diver-friendly location on Port Phillip Bay. There is a fresh water shower for rinsing off and the public toilet block has nice HOT WATER SHOWERS! If you ever dive in Victoria during the winter you gotta love that.

Portsea has a couple dive shops for airfills and boat dive bookings.

Popes Eye

A popular site in Port Phillip Bay. No, it's not the remnants of an old volcano, but it looks like it. Popes Eye is the beginning foundation for a circular "fort" but was abandoned before completion. It is now a marine sanctuary, and home to a lot of gannets plus a seal or two.

The inside of the crater is a perfect calm and shallow (about 3m) spot to anchor a boat. The outer walls have become a really nice artificial reef for LOTS of colourful fish. It's an easy dive for most any certified diver.

Just watch out for the famous current! If you are not diving at slack water time, the current along the outer wall can be very strong. There are plenty of rock wall spots to hang on to though so make your way to the front or back areas out of the current.

Flinders Pier

Flinders Pier was once an L-shaped pier approximately 150 metres long. The L is now gone though there are still remnants you might run into. We've dived it a few times, and the sea life is fantastic. Try to go at high tide, as it's only about 4m deep at the entry point and gets to about 6m toward the end of the pier.

This is a really great dive spot, and you're sure to see something interesting. I don't think I have ever been to the pier without seeing at least one Weedy Sea Dragon, and on one occasion there were literally a dozen or two to be seen during the dive.

Visibility is often good as well, so long as you avoid rainy or windy days.

Dive Experience

Dive Experience is in Williamstown, just across the Westgate bridge in Melbourne. They can be found on Ferguson street, the main shopping area in Willy.

This shop is close to where we live, so we go there for air fills sometimes. There is not always a parking spot in front so takeing along a trolly for your tanks is a good idea.

Boat dives through Dive Experience are chartered out of Queenscliff.

Harbour Dive

A friendly shop just off the main street in Mornington. Has a good selection of equipment, Air Fills, and is opened on weekends. This is our first stop for air fills when we head out on the Penninsula. We always take a chance to look at the viz at the pier, ask them if there are any good dives they know of, then head off.
